Behind the scenes: painting this domed oculus ceiling in a private home in Lake Austin, TX.
It's been a busy few months for me despite the pandemic and I have found myself travelling to Louisiana, Georgia and Texas for jobs. A recent project that I can now share with you is this bespoke ceiling mural in a private home situated in The Island neighbourhood at Mount Bonnell Shores, Lake Ausin, TX.
I was commissioned to paint this beautiful cloudscape on the domed oculus ceiling that sits above the grand staircase. This house, which was modelled after the historic villas
that line the Grand Canal in Venice, and sits on nearly 200 feet of Lake Austin waterfront.
The realistic sky to beckons visitors climbing the marble staircase. It is illuminated by both a tall window and a custom Murano glass chandelier. The mural creates a sense of elegant calm as you ascend the ornate white marble staircase.
"The scale of the clouds is consistent with what one could possibly view through a glass oculus of this size."
The mural is strategically composed; the cloudscape in this ceiling is effective because the scale of the clouds is consistent with what one could possibly view through a glass oculus of this size.
As you can imagine ceilings are always a challenge to paint, especially over a staircase, so I used plenty of scaffolding. I think you'll agree the finished effect is breathtaking.
